Fear and Gunfire Erupt as Rwanda-Backed Rebels Claim Control of Eastern Congo's Largest City

Residents of Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, were fleeing on Monday after Rwanda-backed rebels claimed to have captured the key regional hub from Congolese forces. This comes as fighting intensified in recent days, despite calls from the UN Security Council for the insurgents to withdraw.

Gunfire echoed throughout Goma overnight, and by early Monday morning, dozens of rebels in military uniforms marched into the capital of North Kivu province, which lies on the Rwandan border. The Congolese government has not officially confirmed Goma’s fall, following its decision to cut diplomatic ties with Rwanda on Saturday.

The M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, are one of around 100 armed groups fighting for control in the mineral-rich region, which has been the center of one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts. The rebels briefly took over Goma in 2012 but were forced to retreat under international pressure. They reemerged in late 2021 with increasing support from Rwanda, according to the Congolese government and UN experts, though Rwanda denies involvement.

Experts have warned that this renewed surge in violence could further destabilize the region, already grappling with one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Over 6 million people have been displaced, with more than a third of North Kivu’s population among those affected, according to a UN report.

Residents of Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, fled on Monday after Rwanda-backed rebels claimed to have seized control of the regional hub amid escalating violence. The surge in fighting persists despite calls from the UN Security Council for the insurgents to retreat.

Gunfire echoed through Goma overnight before dozens of rebels in military uniforms marched into the North Kivu provincial capital early Monday. Goma, located on the border with Rwanda, lies approximately 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Congo's capital, Kinshasa. The Congolese government, which severed diplomatic ties with Rwanda on Saturday, has yet to confirm the city's capture.

The M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda according to Congo's government and UN experts, are one of roughly 100 armed groups vying for control in the mineral-rich region. Rwanda has repeatedly denied backing the insurgents. The M23 previously seized Goma in 2012 but withdrew under international pressure. They resurfaced in late 2021, reportedly with increasing Rwandan support.

Analysts warn that the escalating violence could further destabilize the region, already grappling with one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises. More than 6 million people are displaced across Congo, including over one-third of North Kivu's population, according to a UN report.

Thieves deploy explosives to steal gold 'masterpieces' from a Dutch museum.

Drents Museum director Harry Tupan described the burglary as the most significant incident in the museum's 170-year history, leaving staff "intensely shocked.Police were alerted to the scene following reports of an explosion at 3:45 a.m. local time (4:45 a.m. GMT) on Saturday. Forensic investigators and officers reviewed CCTV footage throughout the day to gather evidence.

Authorities are also investigating a burning vehicle discovered on a nearby road, which they believe may be connected to the burglary. "A possible scenario is that the suspects switched to another vehicle in the vicinity of the fire," stated Dutch police.

No arrests have been made, but investigators suspect multiple individuals were involved. The global policing agency Interpol has been called in to assist with the investigation.

Four ancient gold artifacts were stolen during an overnight raid at the Drents Museum in Assen early Saturday morning.

The thieves used explosives to force entry into the museum, which was hosting an exhibition of priceless Romanian jewelry crafted from gold and silver. Among the stolen items were three Dacian spiral bracelets and the exhibition's centerpiece, the elaborately decorated Helmet of Cotofenesti, a nearly 2,500-year-old artifact.

Romania's Ministry of Culture has vowed to take all possible measures to recover the stolen treasures, which had been on loan to the Dutch museum from Bucharest.

Trump suggests that Egypt and Jordan should accept Palestinians fleeing from Gaza.

Trump suggests that Egypt and Jordan should accept Palestinians fleeing from Gaza.

Former US President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Egypt and Jordan to accommodate Palestinians from Gaza, referring to the region as a "demolition site." Speaking about Gaza's situation, Trump mentioned he had urged Jordan's King Abdullah to consider the move, saying, "I'd love you to take on more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a mess."

Trump estimated the population at "probably a million and a half people," suggesting the area could be "cleaned out," with the relocation being either "temporary" or "long-term." He also planned to raise a similar proposal with Egypt's president.

Hamas strongly opposed the idea, with Bassem Naim, a member of its political bureau, stating: "Our Palestinian people in Gaza endured death and destruction for 15 months without leaving their land. They will not accept any offers or solutions under the guise of reconstruction, as proposed by US President Trump."

Naim emphasized that Palestinians have historically resisted displacement and alternative homeland plans and would reject such initiatives. Gaza, home to around two million people, has faced significant destruction during 15 months of conflict with Israel, leaving much of its infrastructure in ruins.

China has been given some breathing room from Donald Trump’s tariffs, leading some analysts to question if the US president is softening his stance on Beijing.

However, this strategy also keeps China guessing. Many in Beijing are asking: What does the US want in return?

Trump has described tariffs as Washington’s “one very big power” over China, signaling that he views them as a crucial bargaining tool.

In response, the Chinese foreign ministry reiterated during its daily briefing that there are no winners in a trade war and emphasized Beijing’s willingness to engage in dialogue to “properly handle differences.” Their tone remains neutral, signaling openness to negotiations.

So, what might these talks entail? And what kind of deal could emerge?

During Trump’s first term, often referred to as a "honeymoon period" with China, he visited Beijing seeking President Xi Jinping’s assistance with North Korea and Kim Jong Un.

This time, there is speculation that Trump might ask Xi for help with Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Trump hinted at this possibility during a video speech to business leaders in Davos, stating that China holds “a great deal of power over that situation.”

Other potential demands could include stronger efforts by China to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States or a long-discussed deal involving TikTok.

Whatever the terms, any agreement holds both opportunities and risks for Beijing. A deal could pave the way for resetting US-China relations. On the other hand, failure to reach an agreement could abruptly end this second “honeymoon” phase and lead to a more confrontational dynamic between the two leaders.

Trump states he 'prefers not to' impose tariffs on China.

Donald Trump has stated he "would rather not" impose tariffs on China, despite previously threatening extensive measures against the world's second-largest economy.

In an interview with Fox News, the US president described tariffs as their "one very big power" over Beijing.

In other developments, a US judge has temporarily halted Trump's order to change birthright citizenship, which was set to take effect in February.

Additionally, Trump has directed the declassification of files concerning the deaths of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. as part of a series of new executive orders.

Trump Pledges to End 'American Decline' at Pre-Inauguration Rally

News Flash
BSS | 20 Jan 2025, 08:42 (Updated: 10:35)

WASHINGTON, Jan 20, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – On the eve of his inauguration, Donald Trump vowed to end what he described as "American decline," outlining a rapid series of actions to restore national strength during a lively rally in Washington. Addressing an enthusiastic crowd, the 78-year-old Republican promised bold measures against woke ideology and illegal immigration.

"Tomorrow at noon, the curtain closes on four long years of American decline, and we begin a brand-new era of strength and prosperity," Trump declared to a packed arena. He pledged to tackle the nation’s challenges "with historic speed" from his first day in office.

Joining him on stage was billionaire Elon Musk, who is set to lead a sweeping cost-reduction initiative in Trump's administration. Musk committed to making America "strong for centuries." The rally ended on a lighter note with Trump dancing to the Village People’s iconic hit "Y.M.C.A.", the anthem of his campaign.

Immigration and Executive Orders

Trump’s address focused heavily on immigration, reiterating his plan to halt the "invasion of our borders." He announced plans to initiate raids targeting undocumented migrants within days of taking office.

The former president also promised a slew of executive orders, including banning critical race theory and transgender athletes in women’s sports, as well as prohibiting what he termed "transgender insanity" in schools.

Additionally, Trump vowed to declassify files related to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Symbolic Ceremonies and Public Response

Ahead of the rally, Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery, where he laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, accompanied by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. This solemn moment contrasted with the lively rally atmosphere.

Despite snowy conditions, large crowds gathered to witness what many described as a historic event. Alan McNeely, a 21-year-old student, said, "I wanted to see history unfold before my eyes."

Inauguration Ceremony Adjustments

Due to freezing weather forecasts, Trump's inauguration, originally planned for the Capitol steps, will now take place inside the Capitol Rotunda. This marks the first indoor ceremony since Ronald Reagan's inauguration 40 years ago.

Incoming press secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted at the themes of Trump’s inaugural address, stating he would speak of "entering a Golden Age of America."

Global Affairs and Transition of Power

Outgoing President Joe Biden marked his final day in office by observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day in South Carolina. In his farewell remarks, he urged Americans to "keep the faith in a better day to come" and promised to remain active in public life.

Trump has already engaged in international matters ahead of his official swearing-in. He played a role in restoring TikTok operations in the U.S. after a temporary ban, pledging to broker a deal to transfer ownership of its U.S. subsidiary away from Chinese control.

Additionally, Trump’s team contributed to ongoing Middle East negotiations. On Sunday, three Israeli hostages were released under a Gaza truce negotiated jointly with the outgoing administration.

As Trump prepares to take the oath of office, his supporters eagerly anticipate a swift and decisive start to his presidency, aiming to reshape America’s trajectory on the global and domestic fronts.

Israeli Military Confirms Ongoing Strikes in Gaza, Ceasefire Yet to Take Effect

Israeli Military Confirms Ongoing Strikes in Gaza, Ceasefire Yet to Take Effect

JERUSALEM, Jan 19, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it continued operations in Gaza, stating that a ceasefire with Hamas had not yet come into effect as the group had not submitted a list of hostages for release.

"The IDF is continuing its strikes in the Gaza area at this time. Per the prime minister's directives, the ceasefire will only begin once Hamas meets its commitments," said military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in a televised address.

Despite this, AFP footage captured scenes of celebration in the central Gaza city of Deir el-Balah after 06:30 GMT, the time the ceasefire was expected to start. Crowds of Gazans were seen cheering, clapping, hugging, and taking pictures with their mobile phones.

Approximately 30 minutes later, AFPTV captured footage of a thick plume of grey smoke rising from northeastern Gaza.

Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement to pause the war in Gaza, facilitating the release of Israeli hostages from the enclave and Palestinians detained in Israeli custody.

  • The three-phase deal is expected to commence on Sunday, although many specifics, including the timeline, remain uncertain. The agreement still requires approval from the Israeli cabinet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated he will withhold official comments until all details are finalized.

  • U.S. President Joe Biden indicated that discussions may extend beyond the temporary ceasefire to a potential phase two, which could aim for “a permanent end to the war.”

  • International aid organizations welcomed the agreement and pledged to intensify their efforts in Gaza. The U.S. announced plans to send over 500 aid trucks daily to the enclave during the ceasefire.

  • Israel-Hamas Ceasefire and Hostage Deal: Key Developments

    Ceasefire and Hostage Agreement:
Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement to pause the conflict in Gaza temporarily. This deal will involve the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel. However, the timeline and certain details of the agreement remain unclear, pending approval from the Israeli cabinet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated he will reserve comments until the terms are finalized.

    Phased Implementation:
The deal, reportedly set to begin on January 19, is divided into three phases:

    1. Phase One:

      • Release of 33 hostages in Gaza, starting with three Israeli women on the first day.
      • Additional hostages will be released weekly, with the process prioritizing women, both civilians and soldiers.
      • In exchange, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners based on Hamas-provided lists.
    2. Phase Two:

      • Permanent cessation of military operations.
      • Release of remaining male Israeli hostages in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners.
      • Complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
    3. Phase Three:

      • Exchange of all deceased individuals' remains.
      • Initiation of a reconstruction plan for Gaza spanning 3–5 years.

    Global Reactions:

    • U.S. President Joe Biden highlighted hopes for a broader agreement leading to a permanent end to the conflict.
    • U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the need for rigorous implementation and expressed optimism for a peaceful future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
    • International aid agencies have welcomed the deal, with plans to scale up humanitarian aid to Gaza, aiming to send over 500 aid trucks daily during the ceasefire.

    Reactions in the Region:

    • Mixed emotions were seen in Gaza and Israel, with celebrations over the ceasefire contrasted by protests and mourning for victims of the war.

    Broader Implications:
The deal presents an opportunity for progress but also faces significant challenges in ensuring compliance and achieving long-term peace.

Protesters form a human chain outside Israel's parliament, demanding the release of all hostages.

On Tuesday, protesters formed a human chain outside the Israeli parliament, also known as the Knesset, demanding the release of all hostages still held in Gaza. As Israel and Hamas move closer to a potential ceasefire agreement, many demonstrators carried large banners displaying the names and faces of the captives with the phrases “DON’T leave me behind!” and “Everyone is a humanitarian case! No one should be left behind!”

This protest coincided with talks in Doha, Qatar, where negotiators are hoping to finalize a ceasefire deal that could lead to the release of some hostages. Under the emerging agreement, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages in the first phase, with negotiations for the second phase, which aims to end the war, set to begin on day 16 of the deal’s implementation.

Shay Dickmann, a protester whose family has been affected by hostage situations, shared her personal experience. Her family member was released in a previous ceasefire deal in November 2023, but her cousin was killed while in Hamas captivity. She emphasized the importance of not giving up on any of the hostages and expressed cautious optimism about the ongoing negotiations.

Dickmann’s message to negotiators was clear: “We trust you to make it happen this time. We need your help. And right now it sounds like you’re the key.”

An Israeli far-right minister is mobilizing support to topple Prime Minister Netanyahu's government over a potential Gaza deal.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has called on Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to join him in threatening to bring down Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over a proposed ceasefire and hostage deal with Hamas.

Ben Gvir criticized the potential agreement as “horrible” and urged Smotrich to unite with him in pressuring Netanyahu by pledging to resign from the government if the deal moves forward. Netanyahu relies on the parliamentary support of both ministers’ parties to maintain his coalition.

“Over the past year, we used our political leverage to block this deal repeatedly,” Ben Gvir stated on X (formerly Twitter). He acknowledged that his resignation alone would not be enough to derail the agreement, which is reportedly in its final stages, but argued that a combined effort with Smotrich could create a “strong enough force” to prevent its implementation.

While Ben Gvir described the proposed deal as a “catastrophe” for Israel’s national security, Smotrich has not yet threatened to step down from the government. Ben Gvir emphasized the need for a united front, stating, “Together, we must make it unequivocally clear to the prime minister that if the deal proceeds, we will both leave the government.”

The two far-right ministers, who were once allies, have clashed recently over disputes concerning police funding.

Gaza ceasefire negotiations have resumed, with mediator Qatar stating that an agreement between Israel and Hamas is "very close" and talks are in their "final stages."

Protests in China escalate into violence following a student's fatal fall.

Violent protests have erupted in China following the death of a teenage boy, sparking allegations of a cover-up by authorities. Videos from Shaanxi province, verified by CNN, show escalating tensions outside the Pucheng Vocational Technical School.

In the footage, dozens of protesters confront riot police, hurling objects such as batons, while one individual throws a fire extinguisher, shattering a glass door. Police respond with force, beating some demonstrators and forcibly restraining others.

The protests were triggered by the death of a third-year student, identified by the surname Dang, on January 2. Local authorities have claimed his death was accidental and not criminal. However, social media accusations suggest an official cover-up.

The unrest comes amid heightened sensitivity to public demonstrations in China, following the large-scale “White Paper” protests in late 2022 against strict COVID-19 policies."

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Nearly 30 years after murdering a husband and wife during a fishing trip, a Florida man is set to face execution in the state’s first scheduled execution of 2025.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed the death warrant for James Ford on Friday. Ford is scheduled to be executed on February 13 at Florida State Prison.

Ford was sentenced to death for the 1997 murders of Greg and Kimberly Malnory. Their bodies were discovered at the South Florida Sod Farm in a remote area of Charlotte County on April 7 of that year. According to court documents, both victims had been bludgeoned and shot, suffering multiple blunt force head injuries.

Red flag warnings persist across Los Angeles and Southern California.

Red flag warnings persist across Los Angeles and Southern California.

A red flag warning, signaling critical fire conditions, remains in effect through Friday across Los Angeles and Southern California.

This warning is driven by strong Santa Ana winds, extremely low humidity, and temperatures slightly above average. Compounding the risk, Southern California is experiencing severe drought conditions, with minimal rainfall this winter.

The situation is dynamic, and updates are frequently issued by the U.S. National Weather Service. Currently, winds are intensifying, particularly in mountainous regions and valleys, where damaging gusts could reach up to 75 mph (121 km/h). More widespread areas can expect moderate to strong gusts between 40 and 50 mph.

These conditions create an extremely dangerous environment. With dry vegetation and gusty winds, wildfires can ignite and spread rapidly.

Although winds are expected to weaken slightly by Friday afternoon, gusts may still reach 40 mph. The lack of rain means fire risks will remain high throughout Friday and into the evening.

Warnings are expected to continue into Saturday, despite a slight decrease in wind intensity. However, stronger winds are forecast to return on Sunday and early next week, with no rain in sight.

Stay vigilant and monitor updates from local authorities.

Wildfires in Los Angeles have claimed at least 10 lives as officials warn high winds could intensify the flames. Five fires remain active, and a suspect is detained, though the fire chief states there's no conclusive evidence of arson. Safety concerns have delayed access to some areas, with fears the death toll may rise. A false emergency alert caused panic, and efforts are underway to destroy roads to halt gas flow fueling the fires.

Israeli hospital reports Netanyahu successfully undergoes prostate surgery

Israeli hospital reports Netanyahu successfully undergoes prostate surgery

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Undergoes Successful Prostate Surgery Amid Challenging Times

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent successful surgery on Sunday to remove his prostate, hospital officials confirmed. This procedure comes as the 75-year-old leader manages significant challenges, including the ongoing war in Gaza and his trial on corruption charges.

Maintaining a Public Image

Netanyahu, who has faced various health issues in recent years, has worked to present himself as a vigorous, tireless leader. During his corruption trial this month, he highlighted his 18-hour workdays, often punctuated by a cigar. However, as Israel's longest-serving leader with 17 years in power, the demands of the role have inevitably taken a toll on his health.

Fallout from the Procedure

Though Netanyahu’s condition is common among older men and not life-threatening, his surgery has had implications. The judges presiding over his corruption trial postponed three days of testimony at the request of his lawyer, Amit Hadad, who cited Netanyahu’s sedation and hospital stay.

Dr. Ofer Gofrit, head of the urology department at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center, assured the public that the procedure went smoothly and there was no indication of cancer. Netanyahu, who thanked his medical team, is recovering in a fortified underground unit designed to withstand missile attacks and is expected to remain hospitalized for observation for a few days.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin temporarily assumed the role of acting prime minister during the operation.

A Critical Moment for Leadership

Netanyahu’s health is under scrutiny as he navigates a turbulent period in Israel's history. The war in Gaza continues, with international mediators pushing for a ceasefire, while tensions escalate with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Netanyahu’s surgery temporarily interrupts his leadership during these high-stakes developments, but the recovery process is expected to be swift. Experts have noted that the type of surgery performed is minimally invasive, allowing patients to return to normal activities within days.

Previous Health Challenges

This is not the first time Netanyahu’s health has made headlines. Last year, he was fitted with a pacemaker following a fainting episode linked to a previously undisclosed heart condition. He has also undergone hernia surgery and was hospitalized for dehydration.

Netanyahu’s health challenges have occasionally sparked public distrust, particularly during times of political polarization and anti-government protests. Nevertheless, he insists on his capability to lead, often showcasing himself in action-packed scenarios alongside military officials.

As Netanyahu recovers, his ability to maintain stability and leadership amid mounting pressures will be closely watched by both Israelis and the international community.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation. What comes next?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation. What comes next?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Resigns: What’s Next for Canada?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will resign as Canada’s leader and as head of the Liberal Party once a new party leader is selected.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader,” the 53-year-old said during a news conference in Ottawa.

To facilitate the leadership transition, Trudeau also announced that Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 24 while the Liberal Party chooses its new leader.

Reflecting on Regrets

During his announcement, Trudeau expressed regret over his failure to reform Canada’s electoral system, a goal he had championed.

“If I have one regret, particularly as we approach this election — well, probably many regrets that I will think of,” he admitted. “But I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice or a third choice on the same ballot.”

Why Is Trudeau Stepping Down?

Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party for 11 years and served as prime minister for nine, has faced mounting challenges in recent years. From escalating economic dissatisfaction to a series of political crises and plummeting opinion polls, his leadership has come under increasing scrutiny.

His decision to resign could be seen as preempting a potential defeat in the upcoming general election, expected later this year, where he is widely projected to lose.

Trudeau initially rose to power in 2015 with a vision of “sunny ways,” focusing on progressive priorities such as combating climate change and addressing historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities. However, his later years in office were marked by economic struggles and growing public dissatisfaction.

A viral exchange with a steelworker epitomized this discontent. “You’re not really doing anything for us, Justin,” the worker told him, reflecting frustrations over the rising cost of living.

Key Political Challenges

Trudeau’s administration also faced turbulence with the unexpected resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland last year. Her departure, just hours before she was set to deliver the annual fiscal update, sent shockwaves through Canadian politics.

In her resignation letter, Freeland criticized Trudeau’s “political gimmicks,” likely referencing controversial pre-election measures such as a two-month sales tax holiday and CA$250 ($175) rebates for most workers. These policies were seen as attempts to regain voter support amid a looming election.

Compounding these domestic challenges is pressure from south of the border. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, poised to return to office on January 20, has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports. Trump has also mocked Trudeau and Canada on social media, calling him the “governor” of the “Great State of Canada.”

What Happens Next?

The Liberal Party’s national executive, responsible for leadership matters, is expected to meet this week following discussions within the caucus. The suspension of parliament allows the party time to organize and select a new leader.

Potential candidates to succeed Trudeau include prominent figures such as former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, among others.

As Canada navigates this pivotal moment, Trudeau’s departure marks the end of an era defined by both significant achievements and notable challenges. The country now waits to see who will take the helm and how they will steer Canada through its next chapter.

New Orleans attacker traveled to Ontario in July 2023, FBI reports

FBI Investigates New Orleans Attacker’s Trips to Egypt and Canada Before Deadly Incident

The FBI has confirmed that the man behind the New Orleans truck attack on New Year’s Day, which killed 14 people and injured dozens, traveled internationally in the months leading up to the incident. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Houston, visited Egypt and Canada in 2023, though investigators have not yet determined if these trips were connected to the attack.

According to FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia, Jabbar traveled to Cairo, Egypt, from June 22 to July 3, 2023. Shortly after, he flew to Ontario, Canada, on July 10, returning to the U.S. on July 13. Authorities are working to trace Jabbar's movements and interactions during these trips.

FBI Special Agent Lyonel Myrthil emphasized that the investigation is crossing state and international borders: "Our agents are working to determine where he went, who he met with, and whether these trips influenced his actions."

Canadian Public Safety Minister David McGuinty confirmed Jabbar’s July 2023 visit to Canada, clarifying that he arrived from Houston, not Cairo. Canadian and U.S. authorities are collaborating on the investigation, with the RCMP engaging with U.S. security partners.

Planning the Attack

Jabbar made two prior trips to New Orleans in October and November 2023. During the first trip, he reportedly used smart glasses with recording capabilities to film areas in the French Quarter. FBI officials believe this was part of his planning process. Although Jabbar wore the glasses during the attack, they were not activated at the time.

The FBI also released surveillance footage showing Jabbar placing explosive devices in the French Quarter hours before the attack. One device, a cooler, was unknowingly moved by a bystander before it could be detonated.

Connection to ISIS

Jabbar, a former U.S. Army soldier, expressed support for the Islamist militant group ISIS in online videos posted shortly before the attack. However, the FBI reiterated its belief that he acted alone.

“There is no evidence of an accomplice within the United States, though we are investigating potential ties abroad,” Raia said.

Remembering the Victims

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry declared a period of mourning, honoring the victims ranging from 18 to 63 years old. Most were in their 20s, hailing from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, and Britain.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden plan to visit New Orleans to console the victims’ families and the community. Governor Landry vowed resilience in the face of tragedy, stating, “Louisiana and her people will never cower in fear. Instead, we will unite and grow stronger in honor of those we lost.”

Conservative Leader Calls for Immediate Election as PM Considers Future

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre recently engaged in an in-depth interview with psychologist and media figure Jordan Peterson, where he outlined his vision for Canada and his plans for its implementation.

This interview, recorded on December 21, came just days after former finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from the Liberal cabinet. In the wake of her departure, opposition parties, including the Conservatives and the NDP, have pledged to bring down the government at the first opportunity through a vote of no confidence, potentially leading to a snap election — a topic Poilievre touched upon during his conversation with Peterson.

### Key Takeaways from the Interview

Call for an Election
Poilievre expressed no hesitation about the prospect of a federal election occurring amidst a potential Liberal leadership race. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is under mounting pressure, including from within his own party, to resign.

"The Canadian people are not obliged — 41 million people are not obliged — to wait around while this party sorts out its issues. They could have ousted Trudeau a year and a half ago."

**Liberal MPs Prepare for Upcoming Meeting**
Liberal MPs are set to convene next week, coinciding with heightened calls for Trudeau to step down. This meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, will be the first since Trudeau announced he would take the holidays to reflect on the pressures to resign as party leader.

An email from Liberal national caucus chair Brenda Shanahan, shared with CBC News, indicated that the meeting could last up to six hours. However, MPs remain uncertain about the Prime Minister's plans, with one member suggesting they wouldn't be surprised if Trudeau chose to remain despite ongoing efforts to remove him.

### Tough Stance on Oil Lobbyists and Crime

In a recent interview, Pierre Poilievre criticized Canada’s energy sector for its compliance with Liberal policies, particularly regarding the environment.

"The big five oil companies in Canada have foolish lobbyists. They employ brilliant and dedicated workers, but their lobbyists are not effective. For the past decade, they’ve failed to advocate for the right policies. That has to change," Poilievre stated.

He also promised "the largest crackdown on crime in Canadian history," though he provided few specifics when Jordan Peterson inquired about his plans, only asserting that "habitual offenders will not be released from jail anymore."

Lawyers Seek Acquittal or New Trial in Border Smuggling Case

Lawyers for two men convicted of human smuggling charges by a Minnesota jury after a family from India died in freezing conditions near the Manitoba-U.S. border in 2022 are requesting acquittals or new trials for their clients.

Attorneys for Harshkumar Patel and Steve Shand filed motions in the United States District Court in Minnesota on Friday, arguing for reconsideration of the verdicts.

Patel, an Indian national arrested in Chicago, and Shand, a Florida resident, were found guilty in November on all four counts related to smuggling unauthorized individuals into the U.S., transporting them, and profiting from the activity. The convictions followed a trial in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Three Years After Tragedy: Patel Family’s Death at the Border

Nearly three years after four members of the Patel family—unrelated to Harshkumar Patel—perished while attempting to cross the Canada-U.S. border, Harshkumar Patel and Steve Shand face ongoing legal battles following their convictions.

The frozen bodies of Jagdish Patel (39), his wife Vaishali (37), their daughter Vihangi (11), and son Dharmik (3) were discovered on January 19, 2022, in a snow-covered field in Manitoba, just 12 meters from the U.S. border. Temperatures that day plunged to -23°C, with wind chills making it feel between -35°C and -38°C.

Convictions and Arguments for Acquittal or Retrial

In November, a Minnesota jury convicted Patel and Shand on all four counts, including smuggling and profiting from transporting unauthorized individuals into the U.S. Shand was arrested near the border in 2022 with other Indian nationals in his van, while Patel, identified as the alleged coordinator of the operation, was arrested in Chicago in February 2024.

Patel’s defense attorneys argue he was wrongfully convicted due to insufficient evidence and errors during the trial, including the denial of his request for a separate trial. They claim there was no proof Patel was involved in a conspiracy with Shand or anyone else, nor that he knew the individuals being transported were entering the U.S. illegally.

Shand’s legal team describes him as an unwitting cab driver, manipulated into the operation by Patel. They also challenge the prosecution’s delayed disclosure of a disciplinary record against a key witness—a U.S. Customs and Border Protection intelligence agent—claiming it hindered their ability to ensure a fair trial.

Motions for Acquittal and New Trials

Patel’s lawyers filed motions for acquittal under federal rules, citing a lack of evidence to meet the standard of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. They also called for a new trial if acquittal is denied, highlighting trial errors and the alleged unfairness of being tried alongside Shand, whose defense strategy implicated Patel.

Shand’s attorneys similarly requested a new trial, accusing the prosecution of deliberately delaying access to potentially exculpatory evidence. They also demanded an evidentiary hearing to examine the government’s approach to disclosing witness-related materials.

Broader Context

This high-profile case has drawn attention to the dangers of human smuggling and its devastating consequences. Both men, if unsuccessful in overturning their convictions, are tentatively scheduled for sentencing in March. The tragic loss of the Patel family serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by migrants pursuing a better future.
