Protests in China escalate into violence following a student's fatal fall.
Violent protests have erupted in China following the death of a teenage boy, sparking allegations of a cover-up by authorities. Videos from Shaanxi province, verified by CNN, show escalating tensions outside the Pucheng Vocational Technical School.
In the footage, dozens of protesters confront riot police, hurling objects such as batons, while one individual throws a fire extinguisher, shattering a glass door. Police respond with force, beating some demonstrators and forcibly restraining others.
The protests were triggered by the death of a third-year student, identified by the surname Dang, on January 2. Local authorities have claimed his death was accidental and not criminal. However, social media accusations suggest an official cover-up.
The unrest comes amid heightened sensitivity to public demonstrations in China, following the large-scale “White Paper” protests in late 2022 against strict COVID-19 policies."
