Israeli Military Confirms Ongoing Strikes in Gaza, Ceasefire Yet to Take Effect
JERUSALEM, Jan 19, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it continued operations in Gaza, stating that a ceasefire with Hamas had not yet come into effect as the group had not submitted a list of hostages for release.
"The IDF is continuing its strikes in the Gaza area at this time. Per the prime minister's directives, the ceasefire will only begin once Hamas meets its commitments," said military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in a televised address.
Despite this, AFP footage captured scenes of celebration in the central Gaza city of Deir el-Balah after 06:30 GMT, the time the ceasefire was expected to start. Crowds of Gazans were seen cheering, clapping, hugging, and taking pictures with their mobile phones.
Approximately 30 minutes later, AFPTV captured footage of a thick plume of grey smoke rising from northeastern Gaza.
